I was a shy, introverted, bullied kid. I had to switch high schools three times because the bullying would get so bad. I always felt out of place and had zero confidence. I struggled to make friends and was often alone.
My dad thought if I became a lawyer I would gain the confidence I needed to make something of myself, and I agreed. Of course, it didn’t really help, and I ended up feeling even more self-conscious, being surrounded all day by big egos.
When I entered the workplace, I was hired by a prestigious law-firm but lost my dream job because the firm partners felt I wasn’t visible enough and didn’t stand my ground – like a lawyer should. But I didn’t quit – I climbed my way to becoming a top international negotiation lawyer, traveling the world, often being the youngest and only woman in the boardroom.
I would often meet other women during my travels, and many felt like I did: invisible, muted, and in the background. Yet, they always had so much drive and ambition.
When my father passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, it made me stop and think about what I really wanted out of life. I knew I wanted it to mean something more than just closing deals for other people. I decided to turn everything I’d learned into something that could help others. I wanted to teach people how to be seen, how to be heard, and how to rise up in their careers the way I had finally figured out for myself. That’s why I started Power Player Academy.
